Balogun Clearance Gives USA a Different Belgium Test

Balogun Clearance Gives USA a Different Belgium Test

FIFA rejected Belgium’s appeal and cleared Folarin Balogun to face the United States’ World Cup knockout match against Belgium. The decision changes the attacking picture for Mauricio Pochettino’s side.

The ruling changes the USA attack

Balogun being available gives the United States a direct running threat it would have missed badly. Belgium now have to prepare for depth behind the line instead of only possession in front of them.

That matters because knockout matches can become narrow quickly. One striker who stretches centre-backs can create space for Pulisic, McKennie and the second wave.

The ruling does not win the game for the USA, but it changes what Belgium have to respect from the first minute.

Belgium’s frustration is easy to understand

Belgium appealed because the striker’s status affects the match plan. A defender’s body shape, the height of the line and the pressure on the ball all change when Balogun is available.

The Belgian staff must now adjust without letting the decision become an emotional distraction.

That is the difficult balance. They can disagree with the ruling, but they still have to defend the player who will be on the pitch.

Pochettino can keep his structure intact

For Pochettino, the biggest benefit is continuity. Removing Balogun would have forced the USA either to change the forward role or ask a different player to copy his movements.

Now the co-hosts can stay closer to the plan that brought them here. That does not mean the lineup becomes automatic, but the tactical menu is wider.

The USA can press with a real forward reference and attack space before Belgium settle into possession.

The match still depends on midfield control

Balogun’s availability is important, but the game will not be decided by one name alone. Belgium can still control long spells if the USA midfield loses compactness.

Balogun Clearance Gives USA a Different Belgium Test

The home crowd will push the Americans forward. The danger is letting that energy turn the match into a stretched exchange too early.

The best USA version is aggressive but organized: force Belgium backward, then protect the ball well enough to keep the stadium loud.

The decision raises the stakes before kickoff

This is now more than a simple lineup update. The ruling adds edge to a match that already carried quarterfinal pressure.

Belgium will want to prove the appeal did not matter. The USA will want to prove Balogun’s return gives them a sharper route to goal.

That tension should make the opening phase intense, especially if Balogun gets an early chance to run behind.

Balogun changes the defensive line

Belgium now have to defend the space behind their centre-backs. Balogun’s runs make the USA attack more direct.

That helps the players behind him. Pulisic and McKennie can use the gaps if Belgium drop or turn too late.

The ruling is not a goal by itself, but it changes how the match starts.

The USA must stay organized

The home crowd can push the USA forward. That energy is useful only if the midfield keeps its shape.

Belgium still have enough quality to punish a stretched match. The USA need pressure, but they also need cover after losing the ball.

Balogun gives Pochettino more choice. The team still has to turn that choice into a clean plan.

Belgium must change the first pass

Balogun’s pace affects Belgium even when he does not touch the ball. Their centre-backs must think before stepping too high.

That can slow Belgium’s first pass into midfield. If the back line is worried about the space behind it, the whole team can become less brave.

The USA should use that fear early. A few direct runs can make Belgium defend deeper than they want.

Pochettino gets one more lever

Pochettino can now choose between a more direct game and a more patient one. Balogun gives him the option to change speed.

That is useful in a knockout match. The USA may need a different answer after ten minutes than they needed at kickoff.

The ruling is only the start. The coaching staff still have to put the striker in the right spaces.
